We are a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that has been meeting the needs of local individuals and families whose incomes fall at or below the Federal Government Poverty Guidelines for over 40 years.

The Cupboard was founded by Mattie N. Dixon, a longtime resident of Ambler and a true visionary.  In response to learning that people in her community were going hungry, she started serving families out of her basement in 1973.  She also had several other homes for her service, like Zion Baptist Church, Church of the Brethren, and 57 Butler Ave.  In 2004, with help from the community, Ms. Dixon was able to purchase our current building on Main Street.

The Cupboard has come a long way over the years!  We have expanded to include an extensive list of food items, a Boutique with clothing and household items, a nurse screening program (provided by Abington Health Community Health), educational programs, housing assistance and financial aid in emergency situations.

We’ve added two programs in 2015: Community Connections and T.H.A.N.K.S.  Community Connections offers the people of Montgomery County “a path to services, access, and advocacy.”  T.H.A.N.K.S. is a charitable organization which provides financial assistance to underprivileged children to explore extracurricular activities in the areas of education, art, sports, and music.  Both programs are on-site weekly.

To facilitate the concept of “neighbors helping neighbors” without regard to race, creed or national origin, by:

– Coordinating the collection of money, food, clothing, furniture, and household items.
– Providing these items to people in need.
– Connecting people with programs and agencies that can help meet their needs.
– Developing and advocating for programs which strengthen families under stress.

We strive to keep families together by providing goods and services to them so they can become more self-sufficient over time.

The Cupboard is open to anyone in Ambler and the surrounding areas that we service.  Please call 215-628-3002 to verify your zip code is in one of our servicing areas.  Upon verification, please come on Monday or Wednesday for an interview between 9:30-11:30am.  Bring your photo ID, along with proof of address and household income.
