Tutoring at the Cupboard
We Believe that no child should ever go without necessary educational support. In the fall of 2005, the Cupboard was asked to implement a tutoring program for the Wissahickon School District. This was in response to an identified need by 1st - 3rd graders in reading and math.
All necessary materials are provided Initially, we received a start-up grant to recruit qualified professionals and provide various educational resources for teachers. The Cupboard provides the space and other essentials (including a snack) so that our volunteer tutors are able to work with students in a comfortable environment.
Snacks are provided Students come to us after being recommended by the school district. After working with parents and classroom teachers to determine the course of action that is needed, each student is carefully matched with an appropriate tutor. At that point, an individualized plan is developed for each student that involves group activities, behavioral reinforcement and one-on-one educational support. Through our tutoring program, we hope to enable students to meet academic milestones in a timely manner and to foster confident, lifelong learners.
